FISU SECURES LIVE COVERAGE ON EUROSPORT FOR ITS FLAGSHIP WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES

18 April 2024

The International University Sports Federation (FISU) has secured a live coverage agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery that will see its flagship events broadcast live across 60 international markets in Europe and Asia on Eurosport with streaming on discovery+ and Max*.

The deal includes live action from the 2025 Winter World University Games taking place in Turin, Italy and the 2025 Summer World University Games held in the Rhine-Ruhr region in Germany.

Staged every two years, the World University Games will see almost 10,000 athletes and officials from 170 countries come together to compete in 18 sports across 12 days of competition with the Winter World University Games taking in 11 days of action across 12 sports. Mass international multi-sport university competition dates back more than 100 years with the 1959 Summer and 1960 Winter editions marking the first official events held under the organisation of the FISU.

To expand the storytelling around the events and athletes competing, Eurosport will produce a series of editorial content to serve digital audiences across Europe. This will include contributions from aspiring writers as part of the FISU Young Reporters Programme, which has been running since 2011 to develop the skills of young students and sports journalists during FISU events in partnership with the International Sports Press Association (AIPS).

Leonz Eder, FISU President, said: “With this agreement, we are making sure that the university sports fans across Europe and Asia will be able to access all the action, emotion and excitement of our 2025 FISU World University Games in Turin and Rhine-Ruhr. This is a wonderful platform for our student-athletes to showcase their skills in mastering their dual careers."

Eric Saintrond, FISU Secretary General, said: “Eurosport has been a trustful ongoing partner for many years and I am extremely pleased that it will continue to promote FISU’s values and multi-sport competitions to its vast audience. We have many stories that deserve to be shared.”

Trojan Paillot, SVP Sports Rights Acquisitions and Syndications at Warner Bros. Discovery Sports Europe, said: “The World University Games is a true celebration of sporting prowess and friendship with the next generation of world-beating athletes coming together to promote the power of sport and education. We are delighted to build on our reputation as trusted partner to numerous federations to collaborate with the FISU to provide a platform for their flagship events to reach millions of viewers across Europe and Asia and we look forward to bringing stories from the competition and its sporting stars to our audiences.”

Warner Bros. Discovery is the Home of the Olympics in Europe and shows more Olympic sports throughout the year than any other broadcaster. Its channel and platforms including Eurosport, discovery+ and Max will be the only places to watch every moment of Paris 2024 this summer live.

*From Spring 2024, Max will initially launch in 25 countries in Europe that currently offer HBO Max, integrating Eurosport content and replacing discovery+ or the Eurosport App. discovery+ is currently available in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, the United Kingdom and Ireland.
